Miguel recently announced the video for “How Many Drinks,” from his Kaleidoscope Dream album, and revealed that Kendrick Lamar is the surprise guest feature.
From the set of his video, Miguel live-streamed the announcement, along with Kendrick.
“I thought it would be really cool to incorporate the fans in a really big day,” Miguel said. “I’m really excited for everyone to see the visuals that we’ve come up with and put some thought into.”
Miguel said the union with the Compton rapper was important for reasons beyond the musical connection with an in-demand MC. He hopes to show how West Coast-based artists can work together.
“Being from Los Angeles I’m really keen on working with artists from my hometown,” he said. “Most of them are my friends. We’ve had the opportunity to run into each other and to do shows together and hang out. For this single, it was really important to remind people there is unity amongst musicians in Los Angeles, and hopefully create a really special moment that sparks even more creative connections and creativity between Los Angeles artists.”
Kendrick has become the go-to artist for guest verses since the release of his critically (and commercially) acclaimed album, good kid, m.A.A.d. City.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that Chris Brown had secured a verse from Kendrick for “Autumn Leaves,” a song from the singer’s forthcoming album, X. The Brown collabo news came as 50 Cent dropped the Eif Rivera-directed video for “We Up,” in which the G-Unit General replaced a verse from his artist Kidd Kidd with one from Kendrick.
While Kendrick Lamar helped to make news by appearing in Miguel’s video announcement, he revealed nothing about his verse on “How Many Drinks.” He only co-signed Miguel’s mission.
“This is LA at its finest,” he said.
